When you get up in the morning and the note in the advent calendar says ‘VISIT SANTA’……. how exciting is that! (and that’s just me getting excited!)
Back in August we booked Santa’s Polar Express at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle. I had heard endless good reports about it and thought we better see what we were missing! We weren’t disappointed!
We arrived at the Polar Express Station (The Percy French) received our tickets and awaited the next departure….. we boarded the train and Hannah was enchanted with the lights and sounds as we headed off on our magical journey to visit Santa. We disembarked outside the grand entrance to the hotel which looked magical against the night sky and headed into the beautifully decorated foyer of the hotel and followed the elf to Santa’s workshop.
We sang with the elves, had a go on the carousel and added a wish to the wish tree before meeting the big man himself. Hannah was a little apprehensive so it was everybody together for a family photo and after some chat with Santa and a lovely gift we headed on our way to check out the various activities.
The Grand Ballroom was beautifully decorated as a winter wonderland and there was an array of activities including, nail painting, face painting, decorating cookies, storytelling with Mrs Claus, colouring, letter writing at the post office and an opportunity to take an ‘elfie! The atmosphere is magical and not at all rushed, Hannah was happy to colour in and write her letter to santa and then decorate a gingerbread man. She was a real wee people watcher, taking in everything around her and looking at the pretty lights.
We then headed through for some refreshments and received a lovely snack box and juice for Hannah with cheese and yogurt and of course some chocolate and sweeties, not forgetting the mini gingerbread men and most importantly frostie the duck! There was also tea, coffee and mince pies for the adults and some lovely stalls to browse for a gift.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Santa experience and couldn’t fault the staff for their attentiveness, everyone was so friendly and added to the magical atmosphere. There was also a variety of festive dining options available which we didn’t avail of this time as we knew Hannah would be too tired afterwards but there’ll always be next time! We instead enjoyed a winter picnic in the car while looking out to sea, but that’s a story for another day!
Hope you’ve enjoyed seeing a little insight into our evening. We are just disappointed we didn’t book ourselves an overnight stay!!
